Abstract:

Biographical, ethnographic and historiographical research in Heraklion, Crete on the social transformation of the city in the first half of the 20th century with emphasis on the social world of Lakko, a "paid love" (prostitution) practices, indigenous cultural creation and transactions in the city's social markets. The study approaches the social and cultural portrait of the micro-society of prostitution in a city in transition and highlights the peculiar value system in which local hierarchies are organized, communication codes are established and the cultural identities of the "rebetiko" world are formed. The research was carried out in the context of the researcher's doctoral dissertation with the scientific support of Stathis Damianakou (Director of CNRS, Paris), George Nikolakakis (University of Crete), Pavlos Kavouras (EKPA) and Antonis Astrinakis (University of Crete).
