Abstract: |
The purpose of the research is to study the history of the brick and tile industry in Athens, Piraeus, wider Attica, Chalkida and Poros, from the moment of the proclamation of Athens as the capital until 1950. The issue is approached in many ways. On the occasion of the buildings of Athens, the products found in them are recorded (bricks, tiles and other building materials made of clay, as well as bricks - tiles made of materials other than clay) and the way of their use (building - architecture). The study proceeds to the investigation of the relevant industry, which was developed in the areas from where the respective products were introduced in the capital (Athens, Piraeus, Attica, Chalkida and Poros). It develops in three axes: a) history of industry development (history of secondary production - history of economy - history of entrepreneurship), b) history of technology used (construction techniques, building installations, mechanical equipment), c) history of work - social history. The parallel action of craft and industrial production and their interaction are a basic methodological approach, at all levels of research. At the same time, the recording of a large set of ceramics operators / production units in the specific space-time context (with a micro-historical approach) allows the overall evaluation of the operation of the industry. |
